The 19th Pafos Aphrodite Festival presents W.A. Mozart’s popular and romantic opera The Abduction from the Seraglio on 1, 2 and 3 September at the Pafos Medieval Castle

Paphos, Chairman of the Pafos Aphrodite Festival, Phedon Phedonos, who said the opera was one of the main events of Cultural Capital Paphos 2017.

 

On behalf of the Paphos 2017 Chairman Christos Patsalides, member of the Board Andreas Hadjithomas said the opera highlighted the concepts of freedom, courage, and forgiveness, and in this way the Cultural Capital wanted to promote the bridges between different civilisations.

 

Minister of Education and Culture Costas Kadis assured that the government would continue to support such efforts and pointed out that the successful staging of operas was one of the factors that gained Paphos the Cultural Capital title for 2017.

 

Italian Ambassador to Cyprus Guido Cerboni said he was pleased that many Cypriots love opera, which was born in Italy at around the year 1600, noting that opera brought artists from various countries together, expressing passion, ideals, and values that everyone could identify with.

 

President of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Egli Pantelaki, said such events played an important role, contributing to culture, creativity, and the social capital.

 

On behalf of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, Xenia Loizidou said Cyprus has managed to gain a place on the international cultural map, adding that the CTO has set cultural tourism as a priority and promotes such events.

 

On behalf of the Bank of Cyprus, Dr. Charis Pouangare, Director of the Consumer and SME Banking Division, said the Bank of Cyprus’ Premier Club, in the context of its contribution to society, supports culture and sponsors Pafos Aphrodite Festival in the context of its social.

 

In a recorded message, American director of this year’s production, Leigh Holman, referred to the multicultural character of the production.

 

Director of Pafos Aphrodite Festival, Stella Shepi, said the aim was to present to the audience beauty, humour, colour, and motion.

The plot takes place in the 16th century at the house of the Turkish Pasha Selim, where Konstanze, the fiancé of the Spanish nobleman Belmonte, is held captive along with her servants Blonde and Pedrillo. They were captured by pirates and sold into slavery to the Pasha in Turkey. The Pasha falls passionately in love with the beautiful Konstanze. Belmonte, who has managed to escape captivity, arrives at the palace to rescue his fiancé and the others, and introduces himself to the Pasha as an Italian architect.
